Earth Day 2010

This thursday, the 22nd of April 2010 is EARTH DAY! There will be a HESC tree at KPD E Level 2 from 8 am to 4 pm. Students can hang recycled items on our tree and make a pledge to mother earth. HESC New Committee 2010/2011

Our last club meeting was a meaningful event as the old committee steped down and the new committee took over. Before the new committee members were announced, the presidential candidates, Arthur, Jack and Oong gave their speeches and the voting began.

The wining group for the Earth Hour 2010 Campaign was also announced while the votes were being counted. The wining team, Kimberly's group, won the limited edition t-shirts.

After a short break with food and beverages provided, the old committee gave out their certificates to committee members as well as members who had been active in the club.

The new committee was then announced as well as the new president of HESC, Arthur Lim Khai Shing. Congratulations Arthur! The new committee members are:

What is Earth Hour?

Earth Hour is an annual international event created by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
During Earth Hour, switching off your light for 1 hour is a vote for Earth, leaving them on is a vote for global warming.
Earth Hour is a symbolic event designed to engage people from all walks of life in the climate change discussion to send a strong message to our political leaders that we want them to take meaningful action on climate change.
Last year, Earth Hour was raised to a new level with hundred of millions of people from 88 countries casting their votes for Earth.

When is it again?

This year Earth Hour is on the 27th March, 2010.

8.30pm till 9.30pm.

How is this helping?

This year, WWF-Malaysia is focusing on marine theme.
Our treasured blue world is facing serious threats from overfishing, destructive fishing, inappropriate development, pollution and climate change.
Rising CO2 levels and climatic changes greatly impact the marine ecosystem by increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, raising sea-levels and causing coral bleaching and ocean acidification.
By switching off your lights for an hour shows that you are in support of WWF-Malaysia.
WWF-Malaysia is committed to working with the government, local communities and the private sector towards sustainable us of marine resources, protecting important and threatened marine habitats and saving endangered species such as marine turtles

We are in a midst of preparing a large scale event to celebrate Earth Hour 2010 so watch out for us! After our successful campaigning of Earth Hour 2009 at One Utama Shopping Centre, we are confident to make this a bigger HIT than the last.

People tend to disregard/forget/ignore the recycling bins eventhough it is everywhere around us. So with this idea, I hope everyone can remember the colours of the 3R bins and use it to keep Mother Earth clean. It would be great to have a sea of blue, brown and orange around HELP Academy one day before Earth Hour (which is the day we are distributing the T-shirt). Place your orders now!

Charades

We've finally had our 1st general meeting of year 2010. "Woohoo!!"

The meeting kick started with a simple introduction by the club prez and an ice breaking session. For the ice breaking game, members are suppose to send a message across by using only body movements from one person to another starting from the back, all the way to the front. At the end, the last person is suppose to figure out the message.

Most people would think that the game are just for fun but that's when they are wrong. The game we played on that day (charades) actually carried a hidden meaning. When one member pass the message to another member, it requires everyone to participate whole heartedly in order to get the message across. It's exactly how the club works! In order to spread awareness regarding the environment we have to work together as a whole in order to get the message across to the public. If we can't deliver the message among ourselves, then there's very little expectation for the public to actually understand and accept our campaign.

Everyone was committed, fun and spontaneous at the same time. As the pioneer committee member of our 1 year old club, it was a great sight to see on that day. New faces, new enthusiasm, new hope for the club.

We're back in business after a long hiatus with exams and what not.

I've been seeing many new faces around college lately. I sense lots of potential "green" member but none has enquired. I'm guessing you guys are still new and just need someone to point the way! =)

Our notice board are located at KPD Block E and KPD Block D Lab Area. For E, it's at the left side of the wall as you enter the building whereas D notice board is at the 3rd floor (Chem/Bio) lab area. If you still can't find them, just ask anyone wearing the "You Don't Have To Wear Green" t-shirt and I'm sure they're kind enough to show you the way. If not, you can always check back here to know when's the upcoming meeting time/venue and activities.

We would love to extend our warm welcome to the latest intake HA04 to be part of our big family tree. Join us and have fun saving our environment.

Man Made Paper

Hey guys!
There'll be a meeting this coming Friday (13/11) at the lab.
Please meet outside the lab by 12.30pm.

We'll be making RECYCLED PAPER out of used and unwanted papers. You can bring items if you want to mix it together with your recycled paper as we will be grinding all of it together.
Example: leaves, flowers, used papers and etc.

That's not all! The recycled paper produced will be used at an exhibition next month where high school students will be coming to HELP college to watch a play. So, we are given the opportunity to promote HESC club. Product of experiment will be used to decorate a tree made of mounting board.

Do your part as a member of HESC club and help us make lots of recycled papers to be used at the exhibition. See you guys on Friday! =)

A Walk With Nature

When's the last time you took a stroll into the depths of nature?
It's time we take it to the outdoors and admire the beauty of Mother Earth.

HESC is having an outdoor trip this Friday the 30th to FRIM (Forest Reserve Institute Malaysia).

We will be doing some trekking and after busting sweats we get the chance to cool ourselves at the waterfall and the best part is we'll be going on a canopy walk. It's optional but I doubt you would wanna miss it when you see how exciting it is.

Details are:

"Date : 30th October 2009
Time : 12pm - 5pm
Place to gather : Lower Foyer of Main Block
(Please make sure you have your lunch before coming. Bus will depart at 12.30pm latest)

Fees : RM10 per person
Attire : Please wear suitable trekking attire, shoes, long pants if you're afraid of leeches, and bring along an extra change of t-shirt because chances are, you'll end up soaking wet from the waterfall ;)

Light refreshments will be served at the end of the trekking. But please feel free to bring your own refreshments if you see the need of it. "

Please don't..

-Have a very heavy meal before the trek, you're gonna feel nauseous.
-Carry too much stuff in your backpack on the way up!
-Make too much noise on the canopy walk as you might ruin chance of seeing the Malaysian flying squirrels.
-Jump on the canopy walk (duh!)

It's actually my first time there and I recommend those of you who hadn't got the chance to got there to tag along with us because from what I heard, it's really exciting and scenically beautiful in there.

Like El Nino

It's been a "practically" interesting week. Last Friday's meeting was held in Lab 3 where members get to conduct not one but TWO experiments.

The first experiment was to investigate the reason behind the rise in sea level from the melting of icebergs on the north pole. Some of you might think.. "of course rise lah! ice melts into water hence the sea level rise lah.." BUT if you think of it based on ~~your friggin logic!~~ Archimedes Principles (physics) whereby it states that, an object displaces the volume of liquid equal to the weight of the object (just like ice cubes in a cup of water) don't you think it's weird how the melting of iceberg can raise the sea level? Have you ever seen anyone's cup of teh ais overflow when they left the ice to melt? So that's mystery no. 1 for us to solve.

No. 2 is the El Nino effect. Two food colouring dye (green/red) was provided to investigate the effect of the El Nino which is frequently happening on the surface ocean waters in the eastern tropical Pacific. It was messy but the result was incredible to watch. I accidentally bump into one of our members who was holding a cup of diluted red dye and he got some on his white sleeves while I escaped! So if that particular member is reading this, "sorry again! I hope it didn't stain.." =(

As mentioned in the meeting, there will be an Environmental Science Lab (Lab 3) Exhibition somewhere in Dec this year. There will be a few "environmental related" projects supervised by our lovely lecturers in groups. This exhibition is one of our major event so it would be a waste to miss out. If you are interested to participate and gain precious experiences, please let us know as soon as possible as places are limited and selling fast!

Just by looking at the pics you can tell how well our members participated in the experiments. Attendance was good but let's raise the head count on our next meeting, aight? Our meetings are usually once a fortnight so I don't think it's too troublesome for anyone. Try to drag along any long lost members, new members are ALWAYS welcome!

How was the weekend people?
Except for those that went for BEP concert at the St. Arthur celebration, I think everyone's is pretty norm. No?
Mine was a bit sad, had a farewell for my best buddy. ='(

Anyhow for those of you thriving to know what HESC is up to.
No, we're not just about recycling and saving energy =.=
We (the board of directors) had been busy preparing for the upcoming Grand Carnival @ Bukit Damansara, Community Centre
It's a last minute decision to participate in such a bombshell event which also explains the "no-meeting" situation last week. Yes, we were as busy as buzzing bees preparing for this...

On that day, we would have our own booth under the banner of HELP Environmental Science Club. Our main objective on that day is to publicize the club and at the same time raising the club's fund for any future club activities. It's time people start paying attention to us, to Mother Earth. Agree?

We are also selling ice balls on that day. They are not any ordinary ice balls, it's flavored! RAWR! Ice balls rolled up from the "snow-thinga-majiga" machine are coated with tasty syrups to be eaten while you're walking around checking out ~~hot guys/babes~~ booths. Aside from that, there will be freebies given away on that day. Special privileges to our members that would show up on that day to show some support ;) Nah, I made that up but I would give you the privilege to lick the syrup bowl? Just drop by and let us know that you're there, it would make a whole lotta difference.

So, start spreading words that HESC is awesome and while you're at it, let your papa, mama, aunty, uncle, brother, sister, girlfriend, boyfriend, hi-bye friend, classmate, band mate or even your maid know about this upcoming event! Hurry, it's this coming Sunday! OMG.. I'm so excited!!

Point of No Return

We had our first meeting since the long sem break. Attendance was quite disappointing seeing how much actually registered as a member since the start of the club. Probably everyone is still in a holiday mood but mind you pollutions and global warming never stops for "holiday", it's constantly active and out to destroy our home.

So what did you guys miss? There was a mini presentation by our club ~~secretary~~ project director, Ivy and Vanu reminding us that it's still not too late to save Earth. Did you know that some scientist actually estimated another 10 years before the damage done to Earth is irreversible? IRREVERSIBLE! No U-Turn! No brakes to stop it anymore.

Picture this, you are driving a sweet Mercedes SLK, speeding from 0 to 180km/h in just 10 seconds and guess what, there's a frigging wall ahead! What can you do? You hit the brakes only to notice the brakes aren't there, you wanna make an emergency U-turn only to find the road is straight as hell and you cannot grind the sides because it's surrounded by rivers. That's right, the situation would be like that if we continue to ignore the damage done to Mother Earth. Wait, that's not really a good example but I think you get my point.

Aside from the mini presentation, as bonus for those that actually took the effort to attend the meeting, Ivy treated us all to a music video of Michael Jackson's "Earth Song". One of my favorite hits from the late King of Pop. Unfortunately I was the only one singing to the song, probably everyone else prefers "Heal the World". Why don't you guys check it out and lemme know?

The time for meetings has been moved forward to 1pm instead of the usual 2pm to suit everyone better. "Hah! Now you guys have no reason to skip meetings.." Till then, peace out~!

Green Light Project

hey everyone,

we are creating a Project Group that is going to be under HESC.

Its name : Green Lights Project

Its aim : To cut down usage of unnecessary lights and any wastage at all, really.

Green Lights' first project will be to promote EARTH HOUR.

We've come up with an extremely exciting plan to promote earth hour! But we're really short on time so we need volunteers FAST.

Here's our plan : we get a bunch of students to go to a shopping mall (yet to be confirmed which) and do a flash mob. What's a flash mob? Of course, we aren't going to do something THAT big. We'll have a mini mini mini mini version of that.Why go mini? Because: We don't want management of the shopping complex to get mad for obstructing traffic. But it'll be cool enough =)

So the point is to attract attention, and then to get the passersby to go to our booth. Which is gonna have information on Earth Hour. Once they're there, we show them slides on Earth Hour just like what Michael showed us the other day, but with extra slides put in maybe. And if they support Earth Hour, and support our cause, we ask them to sign on our pledge wall. The signing of the pledge wall is to indicate and symbolize that they agree with Earth Hour and that they are actually going to turn off their lights for that one hour.

What pledge wall? We're going to construct a simple "wall" with a design related to Earth Hour and we are going to let them sign their names on it if they are going to participate in Earth Hour. Once they sign, we're going to give them a token of appreciation. We are trying to get WWF to sponsor the tokens of appreciation. If all goes well, the tokens will be those wrist bands (like those from NIKE) that glow in the dark and say EARTH HOUR.

When do we plan to do this? : Since Earth Hour is on the 28th, the best time to publicize it is the weekend before that. Which means the 21st and 22nd of March. (two weeks from now)

What we need : we need volunteers NOW. If you wanna be in charge of the mini flash mobs or the information booth, reply me. If you don't wanna be in charge but you wanna participate, reply me. If you have any questions reply me!.

What we also need : We need someone to design the wall. For now, I only know that Joshua and Chee Jiat are some of the creative ppl in the club who are willing to help out. But if there are any more creative minds out there, please contact me.! We also need someone to print the tee shirts that all the participants will be wearing. If someone wants to be in charge of that, act fast. We are short of time, we need to get the shirts printed asap.

Last but not least, we need people to go to the mall to sign the pledge wall. So if you aren't interested in participating or helping out in the event, please still go to the mall to sign the wall and show your support for hesc and your support for earth hour.

NOTE: there WILL be a meeting this Friday, 13th of March. 2.30 - 4pm to discuss about the Green Lights Project.
